Pilot Controller Dialogue: 8 Listening Scenarios

Follow a pilot controller dialogue from the first report to the reply. Practise with eight original exchanges, 24 listening questions and five picture checks.

BRIEFING

Follow the exchange as it develops

A pilot controller dialogue is more than a list of individual words: a request, a response and a readback can change what is known and what happens next. Listen for the speaker’s purpose and distinguish an instruction from a request or an intention.

Each exchange has three questions. Answer from the whole conversation, then open the transcript and check the evidence. If you hear “unable” or “when available”, do not treat the request as an approval. The situations are fictional practice, and test formats vary by provider.

  1. Listen once for the situation and again for the response.
  2. Answer all three questions before checking the transcript.
  3. Look at each picture and identify the visible detail.
