Common questions
Are these ICAO English exercises really free?
Yes. Every exercise on this page is free and needs no account. The email sign-up is optional. The full preparation programme is the Speak, Fly, Pass eBook.
Are these official ICAO test questions?
No. They are original exercises written for Speak, Fly, Pass. ICAO does not run or sell the test: each State’s licensing authority approves the tests used for its licences, so formats differ by provider.
Which skills does the ICAO English test rate?
Six skills: pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and interactions. The overall level is the lowest of the six scores, not an average.
Which level do I need?
Level 4 (Operational) is the minimum for radiotelephony on international operations. The scale runs from Level 1 (Pre-elementary) to Level 6 (Expert).
Is reading or writing tested?
No. Speaking and listening are tested; reading and writing are not part of the ICAO rating. That is why these exercises are built around audio.
