ICAO Level 4 Equivalent to IELTS or CEFR: Practice

Looking for an ICAO Level 4 equivalent to IELTS or CEFR? Check what an aviation language rating involves with twelve free questions and audio.

BRIEFING

Compare the purpose before comparing a label

An ICAO Level 4 equivalent to IELTS or CEFR cannot be established from the source used for this page. It provides no official numerical conversion. Do not infer an ICAO rating from a score or a CEFR label; ask your licensing authority which language tests it approves.

ICAO language proficiency assessment concerns speaking and listening in an operational context. The scale rates Pronunciation, Structure, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension and Interactions; the lowest skill rating determines the overall level. The questions below help you recognise what to practise, but they do not award a level.

  1. Read the comparison guide.
  2. Study each picture or situation and choose an answer.
  3. Use the explanations to plan your next speaking and listening practice.

PRACTICE 01

What a comparison can and cannot tell you

An ICAO level is a language rating for aviation communication. IELTS and CEFR labels are not themselves an ICAO licence endorsement. The source used here does not give an official conversion, so this page supplies no score or level mapping.

Use any other English result as a starting point for practice, then check your authority’s requirements. Work on clear explanations, understanding another speaker and resolving misunderstandings in aviation situations.

PRACTICE 02

Check your understanding

Use the image where one is shown. Choose the most defensible answer; the result is a study check, not a licence rating.

FAQ

Common questions

Is there an ICAO Level 4 equivalent to IELTS?

The source used for this page establishes no official numerical conversion. Do not treat a particular IELTS score as an ICAO Level 4 rating; check which tests your licensing authority approves.

Can I convert a CEFR level into an ICAO level?

The source used here gives no official conversion between a CEFR label and an ICAO rating. An aviation language assessment addresses speaking and listening in an operational context.

What is ICAO Level 4 English?

Level 4 is called Operational and is the minimum stated in the fact pack for radiotelephony on international operations. The overall rating is the lowest of the six skill ratings.

Does a general English certificate put an ICAO level on my licence?

Do not assume that it does. The State’s licensing authority approves the tests used for its licences, and the level is endorsed on the licence; ask that authority what applies to you.

What should I practise for an aviation language assessment?

Practise understanding and explaining operational situations, including unexpected complications. Work on the six skills and check your provider’s test format, which can vary.
